Privacy Policy for MDC

Introduction

MDC ("we", "our", or "us") is committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how our Safari extension handles information when you use it to convert web pages to Markdown format. Please read this privacy policy carefully. If you do not agree with the terms of this privacy policy, please do not use the extension.

Important: MDC is designed with privacy as a core principle. No data is ever transmitted to our servers. The extension operates entirely within your browser and all processing happens locally on your device.

What Data We Access

Page Content (Temporary Access Only)

When you activate the extension on a web page, MDC temporarily accesses:

  • Page HTML: The content of the current web page is read to convert it to Markdown format
  • Page URL: The URL of the current page is included in the converted output for reference
  • Page Title: The title of the current page is included in the converted output
Important: This data is accessed only when you explicitly click the extension button. It is processed instantly in your browser and is never stored, transmitted, or logged anywhere. The data exists only in memory during conversion and is discarded immediately after copying to your clipboard.

User Preferences

MDC stores your conversion preferences locally in your browser:

  • Markdown Style Settings: Your preferred heading style, code block style, list markers, and other formatting options
  • Content Options: Your choices about whether to include images, links, or navigation elements in the converted output

These settings are stored using Safari's built-in extension storage and never leave your device.

What We Do NOT Collect

MDC does not collect, store, or transmit:

  • Browsing history or visited URLs
  • Personal information of any kind
  • Page content or converted Markdown
  • Usage statistics or analytics
  • Device identifiers or fingerprints
  • Cookies or tracking data
  • Any data to external servers
Important: We have no servers and no analytics. There is literally nowhere for your data to be sent. The extension is completely self-contained.

Extension Permissions

MDC requests the following browser permissions, each for a specific purpose:

  • clipboardWrite: Required to copy the converted Markdown to your clipboard. This is the core functionality of the extension.
  • activeTab: Required to read the content of the current tab when you click the extension button. This permission only activates when you explicitly use the extension.
  • storage: Required to save your Markdown conversion preferences locally in your browser.

We follow the principle of least privilege and only request permissions that are strictly necessary for the extension to function.

Data Processing

How Conversion Works

When you use MDC to convert a page:

  1. You click the extension button
  2. The extension reads the current page's HTML content
  3. The content is converted to Markdown format entirely within your browser
  4. The Markdown is copied to your clipboard
  5. All temporary data is discarded from memory

The entire process takes milliseconds and happens completely offline.

No Network Communication

MDC makes zero network requests. The extension:

  • Does not connect to any servers
  • Does not download any remote resources
  • Does not upload any data
  • Does not use any cloud services
  • Works completely offline once installed

Data Storage

Local Storage Only

The only data MDC stores is your conversion preferences, which are saved in:

  • Safari Extension Storage: A sandboxed storage area managed by Safari, isolated from other extensions and websites

This storage is local to your device and is not synced to iCloud or any other cloud service by the extension itself.

Clipboard

When you convert a page, the Markdown output is written to your system clipboard. This is standard clipboard behavior and the data:

  • Replaces any previous clipboard content
  • Remains in your clipboard until you copy something else
  • Is accessible to other applications on your device
  • Is not controlled or monitored by MDC after copying

Third-Party Services

MDC does not use any third-party services, including:

  • No analytics services (Google Analytics, Firebase, etc.)
  • No crash reporting services
  • No advertising networks
  • No social media integrations
  • No cloud storage services
  • No external APIs

Data Security

Since MDC does not collect or store personal data, there is no personal data at risk. Your conversion preferences are protected by:

  • Safari's sandboxed extension environment
  • Your device's built-in security measures
  • macOS/iOS system-level encryption

Children's Privacy

MDC does not collect any personal information from anyone, including children under the age of 13. The extension is safe for users of all ages as it processes data locally without collection or transmission.

Your Rights

Data Control

Since all data is stored locally on your device, you have complete control:

  • Access: Your settings are visible in the extension popup
  • Modify: You can change your preferences at any time
  • Delete: Uninstalling the extension removes all stored preferences

No Account Required

MDC does not require any account, registration, or login. There is no user data associated with any identifier.

GDPR Compliance

For users in the European Economic Area (EEA), MDC is fully GDPR compliant because:

  • No personal data is collected, processed, or stored
  • No data is transferred to third parties
  • No data leaves your device
  • No consent is required because no data processing occurs

California Privacy Rights (CCPA)

For California residents, MDC complies with CCPA because:

  • We do not collect personal information
  • We do not sell any data (we have no data to sell)
  • We do not share data with third parties

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy if the extension's functionality changes. Any changes will be communicated through:

  • App Store update notes
  • Updated "Last Updated" date on this policy

Our commitment to not collecting data will not change. If we ever need to collect data (which we do not anticipate), we would release it as a new product with explicit consent mechanisms.
